The two books of the Soliloquia were, according to the author's own account (Lib. I. 17), written when he was thirty-three years old. Evidently, they were composed immediately following his baptism, in the rural retreat of Cassiacum, located in Upper Italy, which belonged to his friend Verecundus. It is known that Augustine retreated to this location for a time after being received into the Church, and the Soliloquia is therefore considered his earliest Christian work. As it is an early composition, it is also raw in nature.

This classic work includes an active table of contents as well as religious illustrations. The Soliloquia, meaning "Soliloquies" in English, is a reflective and introspective piece, providing insight into the author's personal journey of faith and spiritual awakening. Written in a conversational style, the text takes the form of a dialogue between Augustine and his own reason, exploring questions of the soul, God, and the pursuit of truth.

As one of Augustine's earliest Christian writings, the Soliloquia offers a glimpse into the formative stages of his theological and philosophical development. The work grapples with fundamental issues of human existence, such as the nature of the self, the relationship between the mind and the divine, and the path to attaining wisdom and happiness. Through this intimate exchange with his own reason, Augustine delves into the depths of his inner life, seeking to reconcile his newfound faith with his longstanding intellectual curiosity.

The inclusion of an active table of contents and religious illustrations in this edition enhances the reader's engagement with the text, allowing for easy navigation and a more immersive experience. The visual elements complement the profound and contemplative nature of the Soliloquia, inviting the reader to engage with the work on both an intellectual and a spiritual level.

Aeterna Press, the publisher of this classic, has taken care to preserve the authenticity and significance of Augustine's early Christian writings. By presenting the Soliloquia in this thoughtfully curated format, the publisher aims to introduce this seminal work to a wider audience, fostering a deeper understanding of the author's spiritual journey and the enduring themes that permeate his writings.
